Utah needs to pay for education of growing population by 2050, new report says

Utah needs a plan for education and desperately needs to put more money into it, according to a new report from Utah Foundation.

The nonprofit, non-partisan group says the state’s population is expected to double by 2050, but Utah’s education funding is lacking. In order to improve, the report says the state needs to find revenue including, perhaps, by raising taxes.

But as the report acknowledges, that could be a tough sell here in Utah.

“If it’s not raising taxes, though, the other options are to keep from making policy changes that cut revenue for schools,” said Shawn Teigen, research director at Utah Foundation. “That would be things like tax cuts and other things.”

Teigen also said the state needs a better roadmap as it deals with education issues in the future. He said Utah needs “a statewide comprehensive education plan that we can look to and help inform us on whether or not it’s prudent to cut taxes or to make policy changes that affect educational resources.”
