There is some evidence that water has become a higher-profile issue for Utans in recent years, with four years of consistent drought having given it more attention in recent years across the southwest.
Water supply and quality ranked as the sixth-highest priority among all state issues in a voter survey conducted by the Utah Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank based inSalt Lake City. In previous surveys done in 2010 and 2012, it fell outside of the top 10.
State leaders have adopted a series of strategies over the past decade-plus as the growing population and growing demand start to stretch the available supplies. Gov.Gary Herbert has built on a goal set in 2000 to cut back water use by 25 percent by 2050, aiming to get the job done by 2025 instead.
