Rural Utah seems to be ready to rely more on water conservation.
Voters surveyed on the issue think the state should focus more on conservation than on building new infrastructure projects, according to new research published Wednesday by the Utah Foundation, a nonprofit think-tank based in Salt Lake City.
Forty-two percent of voters surveyed agreed that conservation should be the priority, compared to 21 percent who disagreed, with the remainder feeling neutral on the topic. Rural voters were nearly as likely as their urban counterparts to rank conservation first, according to the report.
Researchers also noted that voters appear to be growing more concerned with water issues overall, with “water supply and quality” ranking as the sixth-highest priority among all issues in a top 10 list released earlier this year by the Utah Foundation.
