Utah Effect: Why the state has faster Internet than most of the nation

October 14, 2015 (Salt Lake Tribune) - The United States has seen a rapid increase in the availability of high-speed Internet in recent years. Nationally, 79 percent of people have access to Internet with download speeds of at least 25 megabits per second, while in Utah, it’s 95 percent, according to a new report by the Utah Foundation. While broadband is widely available, only a little more than a third of Utah households pay for such fast speeds. Maybe that’s why Netflix … Continued

My view: Misunderstood millennials need to join public policy discussion

October 02, 2015 (Deseret News) - My anecdotal experience conforms to the findings of recent polling of Utahns conducted by the Utah Foundation of the millennial and boomer generations, which they compared to the Pew Foundation national surveys. Millennials in Utah are a little more conservative than their national counterparts, with less educationally acquired debt, more likely to marry young, be religious, desire to live in a house. Yet they share the libertarian tolerance on social issues exhibited by their national … Continued

Richard Davis: Utah needs leadership in education funding

September 30, 2015 (Deseret News) - Instead, neither the governor nor the majority of legislators understand that the incremental approach to education funding they are pursuing is inadequate. The governor trumpets the additional $1.3 billion he and the Legislature have allocated for education over the past four years. But he still doesn’t understand (or refuses to acknowledge) how paltry that is compared to the actual need. In his State of the State speech earlier this year, the governor said: “Education is … Continued

In our opinion: Proposed increase in sales taxes

September 28, 2015 (Deseret News) - There is no question that transportation infrastructure needs shoring up, and that includes not just roads but sidewalks and bicycle and pedestrian trails. Forty percent of the money will go to the Utah Transit Authority, which has pledged to use it to expand bus services, which have taken a back seat in recent years to investments in rail projects. UTA’s commitment to use funds for buses makes it easier to support the measure. The remainder … Continued

But not every mile is created equal. Today’s figure includes an interstate system and impressive urban superhighways. And yet we still aren’t keeping up. Leave it to bureaucrats to leave you standing there

July 30, 2015 (Logan Herald-Journal) - According to an extensive survey conducted in 2014 by the McKinsey Center for Government, over 17,000 Americans gave surprisingly low satisfaction ratings to the services provided by the bureaucrats within their state governments. I’m afraid I would have to agree. Here’s just one example. The State of Utah pays a large amount of lip service to helping Utah businesses compete globally. In 2012, the Utah Foundation found jobs and the economy to be the top … Continued

Or that they think that they should be registered to vote. Or they think that it makes them look good to tell even an anonymous poll taker that they are registered. These numbers should … Continued

Millennials: Less religious, less politically aligned, even in Utah

July 14, 2015 (KUTV) - A new study is out on Utah millennials and surprisingly they look a lot like millennials nationwide.
