New study shows Utah charter schools able to receive more funding

State lawmakers attention to providing resources for charter schools has paid off. According to a new study by Utah Foundation the resource gap between district and charter schools has decreased from 14 to 10 percent.

The study determines charter and district schools operate differently in terms of accountability and purpose. Senate bill 38, a school amendments bill,is expected to result in an increase of $193 per charter school student.

“The charter school funding from Senate Bill 38 in the last session goes a long way in making per pupil funding between charters and districts equal,” said Utah Foundation Research Director Shawn Teigen, the primary author of the report. “However, as this report shows, the question of funding equity is more difficult to answer. These are simply two different systems. Whether equity was achieved in past years or will be achieved with SB38 is difficult to determine.”
